Banking and Business Hours

General Information
Banks : When banks are closed, cash and travellers cheques can often be changed at major hotels or department stores. Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are widely available but they are not always open and do not always accept foreign credit or cashpoint cards.

ATMS
Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are commonly available in large urban centres throughout Japan, however many do not accept foreign credit or cash cards and most have restricted hours of service. Many ATMs operate only during banking hours although some remain open until 6-8pm on weekdays. Weekend services are often restricted to Saturday mornings.

Citibank
Citibank operates ATMs at a number of airports in Japan, including Narita, Kansai and Nagoya, as well as numerous locations around Tokyo and throughout Japan. Some of the Citibank machines are open 24 hours a day and all accept foreign credit and cash cards from the Cirrus and PLUS networks (including Visa and Mastercard).

Post Office
Foreign credit, debit and cash cards can be used at over 21,000 Post Office ATMs in locations throughout Japan. Post offices where this service is available display the 'International ATM Service' symbol (a stylised green clover) and stickers indicating which cards are accepted. Cards from the Cirrus, Plus, Maestro and Visa Electron networks can be used. Accepted credit cards include Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club.

Service hours vary depending on location but the following hours generally apply :
Monday to Friday 08:00 to 21:00
Saturdays, Sundays and National Holidays 09:00 to 17:00
Closed from January 1 - 3.

Visa and Mastercard
It is possible to use ATMs to get a cash advance on your credit card. Visit the Visa web site or Mastercard web site for a list of locations throughout Japan. Restricted service hours may apply to these ATMs.

Assistance
Credit cardholders requiring assistance during their stay in Japan should contact the relevant helpdesk service from the list below :

Shops & Stores : generally open on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays as well as weekdays. Many smaller specialty shops are closed on weekends, national holidays and over traditional Japanese holiday seasons.

Department Stores : usually open on weekends and national holidays. Each store closes one weekday each week.
