Jirye Art Village
Address :
769 Bakgok-ri, Imdong-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Description :
Jirye Artists' Colony is a great place to have a unique
experience of Korea. Every month there are events such as making
rice cake or kimchi and you can stay in traditional Korean houses.
Jirye Artists' Colony is a village with Jisan Seodang (Cultural
Asset No.49), Jichonjongtaek (Cultural Asset No.44), and
Jichonjecheong (Cultural Asset No.46), which were moved from the
Imha Dam area because of the possibility of being flooded. Jisan
Seodang was established in 1800, the 24th year under the reign of
King Jeongjo (reign 1752-1800) in remembrance
of the achievements of Kim Bang-Geol, as a place for the future
generations to study in. Jichonjongtaek is the head house of Kim
Bang-Geol’s Family. Established in 1712 at his own request,
Jichonjecheong was a shrine where sacrificial rites were held, which
has been used as an auditorium. Beyond the tile-roofed houses, low
mountains surround Jirye Artists' Colony, and there is a lake down
from the village. If you pass the tall gate there is a large square
and straight ahead is the main building, the schoolhouse on the
right and a shrine on the left hill. Although the village is 350
years old, there are houses with rooms that are heated with wood.
Because the village has preserved the old customs with small
details, it is a great place to experience and understand Korean
traditional culture. Jirye Artists' Colony is a cultural inquiry
spot for foreigners, a creative space for the artists to work, and
is also used as a conference space. It is also used as a traditional
life study site and as Confucianism institute.

Andong Hahoe Village
Address : 690 Hahoe-ri, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Description :
Andong Hahoe Village has preserved the housing architecture and
the village structure of the Joseon dynasty. Moreover, the village
was not artificially created; there are people who actually live
there. Three sides of Hahoe Village (Important Folk Material No.122)
is surrounded by the Nakdonggang River. Because the river swirls
around the village, the village is named Hahoe(河回), and is also
called the spinning river village. Next to Hahoe village are many
pine trees and a soft sand plain, and across from it are beautiful
cliffs. This village became known to the public by a Confusian
scholar of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), Gyeomam Yu Un-Ryong
(1539-1601) and Seoae Yu Seong-Ryong (1542-1607) who had done great
deeds during the Imjin War (Japanese invasion in 1592). Because the
village is surrounded by mountains and water, it had never been
invaded. This is the reason why these houses still remain in their
original structures. There are 180 families in the village and they
are known as the group village of the Pungsan Ryu family. There are
houses designated as National treasures, such as Yangjindang
(No.306) and Chunghyodang (No.414). Also there are other important
folk material such as the Hahoe Bukchon House (No.84), Hahoe Namchon
House(No.90) and Hahoe Juilje(No.91). Houses designated as important
folk materials help to preserve the formation and the backgrounds of
the village of the Ryu family, especially featuring Yun Un-Ryong and
Yu Seong-Ryong. Hahoe Village is also famous for the Byeolsin
exorcism, the mask dance and the Hahoe Mask. The Hahoe Byeongsan
Mask is the oldest mask in Korea and is used in the Hahoe Mask
Dance. Hahoe Village became famous from the visit of Queen Elizabeth
in 1999. Many events featuring the Mask Dance are held. The Andong
International Mask Dance Festival is from between the end of
September and October for approximately 10 days, inside of Hahoe
Village or at the Andong Gangbyeon Festival Grounds.

Bongjeongsa Temple
Address : 901 Taejang-ri, Seohu-myeon, Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Description :
Bongjeongsa Temple was built in the 12th year of King Munmu
(reign from 661-681) of the Silla Dynasty because, according to the
legend, a paper phoenix the Great Buddist Monk Ui-Sang (625--702)
launched from Buseoksa Temple landed on this spot. Documents from
Geuknakjeon say that Neungin Daedeuk, a disciple of Monk Ui-Sang,
had established the temple and it has been rebuilt several times
during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Bongjeongsa Temple is the
largest temple in Andong, and possesses the oldest Korea wooden
building Geuknakjeon. Past the Ilju Gate and the forest path is the
Bongjeongsa Temple. Bongjeongsa Temple has a unique elegant
atmosphere. The old trees and hermitages nearby are also great sites
to see. There are many towers inside such as the Daeungjeon
(National Treasure No.55), Geuknakjeon (National Treasure No.15) and
many others. There are also important buildings such as the 3-story
Stone Pagoda, the representative pagoda of the Goryeo Dynasty
(918-1392). Geuknakjeon from the Goryeo Dynasty, and Daeungjeon from
the Joseon Dynasty, stand next to each other. It will be interesting
to compare the two types of architecture. Inside both buildings
there is a tree with the complete collection of Buddhist Sutras,
Laws and Treatises and others.

Dosan Confucian School
Address : 680 Toegye-ri Andong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do
Description :
Dosan Confucian School was established in 1574 (7th year under
the reign of King Seonjo), by the disciples and others who cherished
their memories of the premier Lee Hwang. Dosan Lecture Hall was an
academy where Toegye Lee Hwang taught his students and concentrated
on his academic studies. In 1574 (the 7th year under the reign of
King Seonjo (1567-1608)) of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910),
Confucian scholars and other literati established a shrine called
Sangdeoksa. In 1969, it was designated as a National Treasure
No.170. After placing the mortuary and performing the sacrificial
rites, they finished the Lecture Hall by building Jeongyodang
(National Treasure No.210) and the West and East Wings (where
scholars could study). When the Lecture Hall was finished King
Seonjo bestowed the sign. When you enter the main entrance there is
Dosan Lecture Hall on the right. The structure of the building is
simple with the square pillars and simple structures of the girders
inserted in the crosspieces. If you go up behind the Lecture Hall
and pass the Jindo Gate, there is Gwangmyeongsil where books are
kept. You can also find the main building Jeongyodang and the West
and East Wings. Behing Jeongyodang there is Sangdeoksa and there is
Jangpangak, a tree to print the ‘Dosan 12 Songs’. Okjingak, which
was rebuilt in 1970, is now an exhibit building for the relics of
Toegye such as his stationary, furniture, his favorite books etc.
