Gyeongsangnam-do
Description :
Bugok Hot Springs, located at the foot of Mt. Deokamsan, was
designated as a national tourist resort in 1977. It is one of the
best hot springs in South Korea, appointed as Special Tourist
Complex in January 1997. ‘Bugok’ was named according to the iron pot
shape of the land. The temperature of the water is 78°c, high enough
to softly boil an egg. As a representative sulfur hot spring, the
spa is good for those who have difficulties with breathing,
neuralgia, rheumatism, skin disease, chilblains, bruises, prickly
heat and leucorrhea. Other than sulfur, the water also contains over
20 kinds of inorganic matters such as silicon, chlorine, calcium and
iron. As a multi-complex resort, Bugok Hot Spring Tourist Special
Complex covers various facilities other than the large spa, such as
the grand performance hall, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, zoo,
botanical garden, five tourist hotels, 23 accommodation and 21
shopping centers. It is a suitable place for short family trips
where you can relax your tired body at the hot spring, and rest at
the accommodation and recreation facilities in the complex. There is
a footprint of a herbivorous dinosaur in front of the Ilsung
Condominium and eggs boiled in the hot spring water are served in

Uponeup Marsh
Address : Yibang-myeon, Yueu-myeon, Daehap-myeon areas of
Changryeung-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
Description :
There are four large and small swamps around the Yibang-myeon,
Daehap-myeon, and Daeji-myeon areas of Changnyeong-gun, which are
collectively called ‘Uponeup Marsh’. They are the largest natural
swamps in South Korea, with a total size about 5,550 square km. The
bottom of the swamp is shallower than 1 m and there are over 1,000
species living in the swamp. It has a primitive atmosphere with 100
kinds of plants containing 28 kinds of aquatic plants and 72 types
of hydrophytes. Uponeup Marsh is a primitive low bed wetland, which
was created about 140 million years ago. When soft ground collapsed,
water started to come to a low basin, and this was a lake where
dinosaurs lived 100 million years ago. Uponeup Marsh was formed in
with the sediments from the mountains brought in by rivers. From the
outer edge, the current Uponeup Marsh is going through natural
alteration and ecological succession from a lake to swamp and from
grass-covered plain to a forest. At Uponeup Marsh there are eight
famous sites such as fireflies, constellation gazing, and willow
groves, but there are many, many other interesting things to see.
Among the eight famous sights, the Upo rain-fog is an especially
eye-catching natural phenomenon, becoming visible when there is no
wind, when skies are clear, and the temperature difference between
day and night is 10 degrees or more. The most beautiful moment in a
rain-fog is 10-30 minutes right before or after sunrise. The
fireflies come out around 8-9 P.M. in August and September, and they
are also worth watching. In winter, migrating birds spend their
winter here and you can watch about 33 species of birds such as
swans, whopper swans, bean geese, teals and wild ducks. It is better
to take a walk in the evening or early in the morning rather than in
the daytime, it would be great also to visit in the night under the
starlight.
