Destinations Cheorwon-gun |
|
Cheolwon combines beautiful scenery with the tragedy of the division
between North and South Korea. The open vistas are widely known for
their superb granaries. Not only does it harbor the remains of painful
memories of the Korean War in the form of underground tunnels and
Labor Party politics, but it also encompasses places of pure beauty
such as Goseokjeong Pavilion and Sambuyeon Waterfall.

Cheorwon Hantangang River rafting
Address : 697 Guntan-ri, Galmal-eup, Cheolwon-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
Rafting refers to riding swift currents using thick rubber boats
(I.B.S). Places where you can enjoy rafting in Korea are Hantangang
River in Cheorwon, Naerincheon stream in Inje, Donggang river in
Yeongwol, but the river with the most ideal set of conditions for
rafting is the Hantangang river in Cheorwon. The river, situated
about an hour and a half away from Seoul, is deep and clear, and
filled with naturally formed but fantastical looking Giamgoeseok
rocks that lie along the river like a scroll of painting. You will
no doubt express your awe and admiration at the sights as you raft
without even being aware of it! From Seoul, you can get on a express
bus at either Dong-Seoul Bus Terminal or Dobong Bus Terminal that
will bring you directly to the Hantangang River. After arriving at
Sincheorwon, call the camp and a shuttle bus will come and pick you
up.

Cheorui Samgakji (The Iron Triangle Zone)
Address : Dongsong-eup, Cheolwon-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
The Cheorui Samgakji is the area that connects Gimhwa, Pyeonggang
and Cheolwon. This area had the heaviest casualties during the Korean
War with the Baekmagoji Battle and Oseongsan Battle . The Cheorui
Samgakji was prohibited to the public after 1953 when the war
concluded in an ceasefire, but the reality of the war was slowly
revealed starting from November 1989. The Cheorui Samgakji was the
headquarters and frontline of the North Korean Army. This area had the
unique natural advantage of being a difficult spot for Allied forces
to attack, but an easy spot for North Koreans to defend. At the old
battlefields are the labor headquarters, the 2nd tunnel and the
remains of a train with a sign that reads 'The iron horse wants to
run'. The Labor Headquarters, a Russian-style 3-story building, was
built by compulsory fund raising and labor mobilization. Many people
who were in the anticommunist movement were brought here and tortured
and killed. Behind the building remains of people, bullets and iron
chains are still being found today. This is also the spot where the
2nd tunnel, 108km north from Seoul, made by North Koreans to invade
South Korea. It is also known as the gathering area of seasonal birds
and is a popular bird watching spot.

Goseokjeong Pavilion
Address : Jangheung-ri, Dongsong-eup, Cheolwon-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
Designated as National Tourist Area in 1977, Goseokjeong Pavilion
was built during the Silla Dynasty (BC 57∼AD 935) during the reign of
King Jin-Pyeong (reign 579∼632). It is merely 60 square meters built
up to two stories. After losing the original pavilion during the
Korean War, the Goseokjeong Pavilion of today was restored in 1971 by
volunteers of Cheolwon. Rather than the pavilion itself, Goseokjeong
Pavilion is more renowned for the landscape of the lake with the 10m
rock that stands in the middle. The Goseokjeong Pavilion area is the
only eruptive area of basalt in Korea. Climb on the Goseokbawi rock
and view the interesting rocks and the ‘S’ shaped Hantangang River.
Riding boats and fishing are allowed but swimming is prohibited. To
observe the Iron Samgakji you must submit an observation application.
Also included in the tour are the Baekma Native Site, War Bandits, and
Labor Headquarters, and the tour takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. You
will receive an entrance card when you pay the admission fee. Follow
the guide and move by car at 10:30am, 1pm and 2:30pm. After visiting

divided country, you can visit Cheolwon Hot Spring and relax in the
hot springs, or head to Seokjeong Land to enjoy you time with your
