Cheongpyeongsa Temple
Address :
Cheongpyeong-ri,
Buksan-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon-do
Description :
Cheongpyeong
Temple became more widely known with the opening of Soyang Waterway.
It is a thirty-minute walk from the port. The temple stands on the
southern ridge of Mt. Bongsan. It was first built in 973, during the
reign of King Gwang-Jong (949-975) of the
Goryeo Dynasty by Monk Seung Hyeon. It had been opened and closed from
time to time, but still remains today. During the Korean War,
Gugwangjeon and Saseongjeon of the temple were lost, but the
Cheongpyeongsa Revolving Door (National Treasure No.164), which
symbolizes metepsychosis, and Geukrakbojeon remain today. Near
Cheongpyeongsa Temple is Cheongpyeongsa Valley, which is known for its
clean water and Guseong Waterfall, known to make 9 different sounds.
Guseong Waterfall stands right next to the path and the water falls
from the upright stone. Past the waterfall is an artificial pond 'Yeongji'
made by Lee Ja-Hyeon. In the pond there are three big stones, and
between those stones reeds were planted to reflect the pasture of
Mt.Obongsan. Past Yeongji pond is Cheongpyeongsa Temple. The path to
Cheongpyongsa Temple is a pretty walkway surrounded by the woods and a
clean valley. The three story stone pagoda of Cheongpyeongsa Temple
has a myth attached to it. Once a young man who loved a princess was
killed. He was born again as a snake and he stuck to the princess and
would not get off. The princess went to famous temples to pray for the
snake to leave her and one day she came to Cheongpyeongsa Temple.
After holding a Buddhist ceremony here, the snake left her and she
built the 3 story pagoda above Guseong Waterfall and went back to her
kingdom. The pagoda still remains and is called Gongju Pagodatower, 'gongju'
meaning princess in Korean. In Cheongpyeong Temple is Jinrak-gong, the
oldest garden of the Goryeo Dynasty made by Lee Ja-Hyeon. This garden
has stones piled up into a ladder shape, and a stream flows between
the stone isles.

(462,809㎡) isle, and on it is the grave of General Nami, who led a
great victory against the rebels in the 13th year of the 7th king of
the Joseon Dynasty, King Sejo (reign 1455 - 1468). Namido Island is 63
km away from Seoul in the direction of Chuncheon, and is famous for
