Scholarly Pursuit at the Wang-In Cultural Festival in
Yeongam.
Yeongam has a long history as the center of Korean, Japanese and
Chinese trade from ancient times during the Goryeo Kingdom
(918-1392 A.D.). It is also the birthplace of many distinguished
scholars, in particular, Wang-In who introduced the
Thousand-Character Classic and the Analects of Confucius.
Furthermore, potters and weavers from the area (which was the
Baekje Kingdom, one of the three kingdoms during the period)
migrated to Japan during the 1600s to ply their trade, which
later bloomed into Japan’s Aska culture.
The festival is a tribute to the noble ideals of Wang-In and
highlights his accomplishments. It opens in April when cherry
blossoms are in full bloom on Mt. Wolchulsan creating one of the
most beautiful scenery in Jeolla-do. The festival is full of
opportunities to experience the origin of the Confucian culture
