Destinations Goseong-gun |
|
Goseong can be found on
the northernmost part of the East Sea and is rarely traveled,
contributing to its outstanding purity and cleanliness. Hwajinpo
Beach, Hwajinpo Marine Museum, Wanggok Folk Village, and Geonbongsa
Temple are all famous tourist spots. The Cheongganjeong Pavilion in
Gwan-dong is particularly attractive for the harmony it creates
between the East Sea and the surrounding cliffs.

Tongil Unification
Observatory
Address :
Myeongho-ri, Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun
Description :
Built by an
army unit in 1983, Tongil Unification Observatory (height – 700m) was
the closest place where you could view the Mt. Geumgangsan before it
was opened to South Koreans. The nearest part of the Mt. Geumgangsan
is 16km away and the farthest part is about 25km away. From the
Observatory, you can see Haegeumgang, and the islands nearby,
Manmulsang, and Hyeonjongam. On clear days, you can also various peaks
of Mt. Geumgangsan such as Ilchulbong (1,552m), Chaehabong,
Jipseonbong, Yukseonbong, Gwaneumbong, and even the greatest peak of
Mt. Geumgangsan, the Birobong Peak. Tongil Unification Observatory is
the closest spot to the north, and many people who visit are those who
had to leave their home and were separated from their families during
the Korean War. You can see monuments built in the hope of
reunification here. Tongilanbo Park, which can be considered the
entrance of Tongil Jeonmangdae, was built in 1987 to be used as the
nation’s security site. You must pass by here to get to Tongil
Unification Observatory, making the entry process somewhat
inconvenient.
Directions :

Hwajinpo Lagoon
Address :
Geojin-eup and Hyeonnae-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
Hwajinpo is
named so because there are sweet briers that bloom by the lake, and it
is one of nature’s great lagoons. It is designated Gangwon Provincial
Monument No. 10 with a circumference of about 16 km, and it has a wide
reed field which is an important place for migratory birds and swans
in the winter. Hwajinpo Lagoon is surrounded by evergreens and white
sandy beaches; it is a lagoon where the river and the sea meet.
Materials drifting down the river deposited at the bottom of the river
become a sandy beach that eventually block off the river from the sea,
creating a lagoon. Hwajinpo Lagoon is the largest lagoon near the East
Sea, and has many ancient artifacts around it, such as the Ten Goindol
rocks (also called Jiseokmyeo) scattered around the lake. Because of
its excellent scenery, Kim Il-Seong (1912-1994) of North Korea and the
South Korean president Lee Seung-Man (1875-1965) had summer houses
here after the independence of Korea in 1945. The two houses that
originally faced each other with the lake at the center are gone now,
but the sites still remain as tourist destinations. They have been
converted to Hwajinpo’s Museum of History, and opened to public as a
security exhibit center.
Directions :
From Sokcho
Intercity Bus Terminal, take the bus going to Hwajinpo Lagoon. Takes
about 50 minutes.
