Geumdang Valley & Rafting
Address : 1
Yupo 1(il)-ri, Bongpyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
One of the
most well known sites to rafting maniacs is the Geumdang Valley of
Pyeongchanggang River. It is a 5 km course along Mt. Geumdangsan and
Mt. Geomunsan from the Deungmaeji Village, which is at the upper
stream, to Baekam-dong. The current of water is strong enough from
the beginning that one does not necessarily have to row, and the
water volume is high. The launching point of a proper Geumdang
rafting course is from where you can see Mt. Geumdangsan rising
behind the riverside, and finish at Baekam-dong. The water is clean
and there are sandbanks sporadically, which are adequate for taking
breaks. The water stream of Geumdang Valley joins with that of
Pyeongchang River past Gaesuri. Pyeongchang River is a perfect
fishing site for Mandarin fish, Korean piscivorous chubs, and Daces.

Description :
Mt.Odaesan
National Park was designated as a national park in 1975. Mt. Odaesan
was named so because of the following 5 plateaus; Manwoldae,
Jangryeondae, Girindae, Sangsamdae and Jigongdae. Featuring the 1563m
high Birobong Peak, Mt. Odaesan spreads southwest with Mt. Sodaesan,
Horyeong Peak and Mt. Sogyebangsan. The east side is connected with
Sangwang peak and Duro Peak, which are over 1,000m high. The
representative temple of Mt.Odaesan, Woljeongsa Temple, was named
after the fact that the full moon that rises above Manwoldae (Mt.
Dongdaesan) is particularly bright. At this temple the famous Octagon
shaped 9-story pagoda (National Treasure No.48) and the Stone Seated
Buddha Figure (National Treasure No.139) is preserved. Also,
Jeokmyeolbogung of Woljeongsa is where Monk Ja Jang preserved the
Sakyamuni’s noble relics. Inside Woljeongsa Temple, follow the fir
trees 5 km east, and you will reach Sagoji where Yeonggamsa Temple
stands. Mt. Odaesan has the largest natural woods of Korea. There are
many wild animals and plants living here. The Birobong area is famous
for the Nuncheunkbaek trees and Yew tree forests. The royal azelea and
Geumgang Chorong from Duro peak to Sangwang Peak are famous and there
are animals such as boars, musk deer, turtledoves and colorful
woodpeckers there.

Sangwonsa Temple
Address :
Dongsan-ri, Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
Sangwonsa
Temple is located 8km north of Woljeongsa Temple. Stories are told
that Sangwonsa Temple was built by Buddhist monk Ja Jang (590-658) in
643, in the 12th year of Silla Queen Seon-Deok, and others say that it
was built by Bocheon and Hyo-myeong, the sons of King Sin-Mun (reign
681-692), the 31st king of the Silla Dynasty. It was rebuilt in 705,
in the 4th year of King Seong-Deok (reign 702∼737), but it burned in
1946 in a fire, and was restored yet again in 1947. Only a Bell
Pavillon was remaining then, and the building was rebuilt after
Korea’s Independence Day. The oldest relic left today is Dongjong
(National Treasure No.36), Munsu Child Figure, and the Jungchang, the
promotion of virtue in rebuilding Sangwonsa Temple, written by the 7th
king of the Joseon Dynasty King Sejo (reign 1455∼1468). At the
entrance is a site called Gwandaegeori, named after the story that
King Se-Jo would hang his royal garments here when he took baths.
Also, there is the Munsu Child Figure where the story of King Sejo and
monk Munsu comes from. As National Treasure No.221, the official name
is Sangwonsa Munsu Wooden Seated Child Figure. At Sangwonsa Temple,
there are other pieces other than the Munsu Child figure. The 91cm
diameter Sangwonsa Dongjong was established in 725, in the 24th year
of Silla King Seong-Deok. It is famous for its beautiful bell sound
and the delicately carved Juakbicheon figure but nowadays it is slient
to preserve the bell. Sangwonsa Temple is located at Jungdaeam on the
way to Jeokmyeolbogung in the Mt.Odaesan Birobong Peak direction. At
the 2km southwest point is a hermitage where Utongsu Stream, the
origin of the Hangang river, flows. Jeokmyeolbogung is a reliquary
which possesses the bonesetting relics of Buddha, which was brought by
monk Ja Jang from Dang(China).

Woljeongsa Temple
Address : 63
Dongsan-ri, Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang-gun, Gangwon-do
Description :
Woljeongsa
Temple is located in the forest of the valley east of Mt. Odaesan, and
it is composed of 60 temples and 8 hermitages made into one large
temple. Woljeongsa Temple was established by Monk Ja Jang(590-658). At Woljeongsa Temple there is the Seongbo Museum where you can view the
Buddhist culture of the Goryeo Dynasty(918∼1392), the Octagon shaped
9-story pagoda, also called as the Sari-pagoda(relic pagoda), and the
Stone Seated Buddha figure. Also there is the Jeokmyeolbogung where
Buddha's bone relics are said to be preserved, and the large sermon
hall Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion. Usually in a Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion the
Vairocana figure is enshrined, but it is interesting that the
Sakyamuni figure is enshrined at Jeokgwangjeon Pavilion at Woljeong
temple. Woljeongsa Temple of today is the restored temple after a
Korean war in 1950 when the Chilbulbojeon, Yeongsanjeon, Gwaneungjeon,
Jinyeonggak and 17 other buildings were burned. Many cultural assets
and historic data were lost at this time. The Silla Dongjong, which
was excavated from the Seonrimwon site in Yangyang-gun, was also lost.
The Budo site (relic site) and sagoji(historic document storage) is
nearby Woljeongsa Temple. The Budo site is a 15-minute walk from
Woljeongsa Temple to Sangwonsa Temple, just before crossing the Banya
Bridge. Here there are 22 pagodas that possess the remains of the
monks who had lived here. Sagoji is an hour’s walk from Woljeongsa
Temple in the Sangwonsa direction near Yeonggamsa Temple.
