  A fiesta of colour and noise, in which traditionally-built boat race through the waters of Penang's scenic Mengkuang Dam, cheered on by enthusiats spectators. The race begins with a slow beating of the drums by the helmsmen. The beat increases steadily, going faster and faster, and then rising to a cresendor as the boats cross the finish line. The ornate and beatifully painted 'dragons' on the boats prows add to the gaiety of the festival.

• The Birthday of His Majesty The Yang Di-Pertuan Agong

  His majesty, the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong (the King of Malaysia) celebrates his official birthday on 7 June. In the morning, Malaysians join the King and Queen as well as Cabinet Members at Dataran Merdeka to witness the "trooping of the colours" by the armed forces. This is also the occassion where His Majesty bestows awards upon deserving Malaysians who have rendered distinguished or excellent services to the country. A tea function and banquet is held in the Palace during which the King and Queen mingle with official guests and people from all walks of life, in which cultural shows and exhibitions are generally held in the city in conjunction with the King's birthday.

  The state of Sarawak almost comes to a standstill when the Ibans, the largest ethnic group in the state and others such as Orang Ulu and Bidayuh celebrate the paddy harvesting season. Relatives and friends are treated to tuak (rice wine) and traditional delicacies at 'open house' in longhouses in the State. This is a great opportunity to get to know the native people of Sarawak better as they host open houses during this fun-filled annual celebration.
