Malaysians celebrate Merdeka Day or Independence Day this month. A
proliferation of Malaysian flags can be seen everwhere - on
vehicles, buildings and homes as citizens give in to the fervor of
national pride. Visitors should look out for fireworks displays,
historical and patriotic exhibitions in shopping centers and hotels;
cultural shows highlighting in the diversity of the Malaysian people
and parades across the country beginning on 17 August with a grand
celebration to kick off the festivities. The official Merdeka Day
parade is held on the morning of 31 August.

Started over one and a half centuries ago this event was a means of
determining the victor of a confrontation without having to resort
to war. Held annually in Kuching, the capital of the state of
Sarawak, the race takes place on the Sarawak River, off the city's
award winning waterfront. Traditional longboats have today been
joined by hornbill and balak boats with modern powerboat and jet
skis adding to a colorful and exciting weekend.

Aso known as the Mid-Autumn festival, the Lantern and Moon Cake
Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the eight month of the
lunar calendar. It marks a successful rebellion against the Mongol
rulers during the 14th century in China, during which the secret
about a plot against the Mongols was hidden inside moon cake and
lantern competitions and processions are held, and moon cakes of
various flavours are eaten.
