Symphony Orchestra - Brahms And Sibelius |
|
Date |
28 Nov 2003 |
|
Event & Description |
Lose yourself in
Singapore Symphony Orchestra's weekly repertoire of classical
masterpieces, familiar all-time favourites, contemporary as well
as exploratory works and more. These maestros continue to
surpass the high standards in symphonic music. The renowned
Estonian conductor Eri Klas makes an eagerly awaited return to
the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, taking the helm in Sibelius'
Second Symphony, the Finnish composer's most popular symphony.
The work marks a transition between the youthful and the mature
Sibelius. Like the tone poem Finlandia, the Sibelius' Second
Symphony's heroic strains became an iconic symbol and rallying
point for Finnish nationalism. The brilliant young Italian
pianist Giovanni Bellucci, last heard in the 2001 Singapore
International Piano Festival, is the soloist in Brahms' First
Piano Concerto. A highly dramatic work which had its origins as
an aborted symphony, this is Brahms at his most bold and
exuberant. Listen for its flamboyant piano writing and
unforgettable finale. |

Singapore
Symphony Orchestra - Chamber Ensemble Series - The Joy of
Sextets |
|
Date |
30 Nov 2003 |
|
Event & Description |
Lose yourself in
Singapore Symphony Orchestra's weekly repertoire of classical
masterpieces, familiar all-time favourites, contemporary as well
as exploratory works and more. These maestros continue to
surpass the high standards in symphonic music. The string sextet
earned its right as a genre in the Romantic era, when music of
increasing complexity and intricacy transcended the limits of
the traditional string quartet. When two violinists, two
violists and two cellists come together to make music, a
distinctively full and rich sonority results. Brahms' Second
Sextet is one of the finest examples in this genre. Schoenberg's
Verklไrte Nacht (Transfigured Night) in its original sextet
version, based on an Expressionist poem by Dehmel, is the great
20th century musical innovator's most popular and tuneful score.
Both pieces will be performed by the Singapore Symphony
Orchestra at this concert. |
