The life of any region arises out of its historical past, its remembrance of culture, and its hold on the future. The Taipei County government has established museums of tea culture, pottery and ceramics, and other sites to help preserve the memory of the common history and culture. Taipei County is rich in cultural resources. It's a major cultural county that hosts a rich variety of cultural activities. Come! Join us as we trace our cultural roots. The confluence of the Tamshui, Hsintien and Keelung Rivers gave rise to Taipei County, which expanded gradually inland from the smallish river mouth to achieve its present scope. The meeting ground of the rivers stretches away in a scene of grandeur as the seashore, its terrain carved out by the hand of time, faces off with the low mountains standing peacefully in the distance of Taipei County.

  • Keting
Keting is a junction at the top of the hill from which visitors can either climb Mt. Keelung, go to Chinkuashih and Shuanghsi, or proceed to Jiufen. It is a good place to observe the variations in color of the ocean below. The blended light and dark shades can resemble the ying and yang symbol.

  • Retracing the Tsauling Historic Trail
The Tsauling Historic Trail cuts across Sandiau Cape, starting at Yuanwangkeng, just inland from Fulung, and ending at Dali on the coast. It is the only remaining section (rebuilt by the Tourism Bureau) of the old Ching dynasty trail that was constructed 130 years ago to provide the only land link down the Northeast Coast from Danshuei to Ilan. The present trail is approximately 10 kilometers long and offers a pleasant hike of two to three hours. Two large boulders along the trail bear Ching dynasty inscriptions and are listed as third-class historic sites. One of the inscriptions has four Chinese characters meaning "Bravely Suppress the Wild Mists" and the other bears the single character "Tiger" (the tiger is believed to control the winds). Both were ordered by the regional commander of imperial forces in Taiwan, and were meant to ward off the baleful influences of nature in this once-remote area. To hike the Tsauling Historic Trail, you can take the train from the Fulung or Gungliau station, and walk (about 40 minutes) from there to the head of the trail at Shinshe Bridge in Yuan-wangkeng. From the other end of the trail, you can take the return train from the Dali station. If you are driving, you can consider leaving your car at Tiangung Temple in Dali and hiking the trail both ways.
