AMPHOE MUANG

Prap Ho Monument
This monument was built to honor the dead who crushed the Chinese Ho rebellion of 1886. The monument, built on the order of Prince Prachak Silpakhom, was originally behind Nong Khai police station but was moved in 1949 to its present location at the intersection of roads entering Nong Khai. The monument has inscriptions in Thai, Chines, Lao and English. The province holds a celebration at the monument every March 5th.

Luang Pho Phra Sai
This gold Buddha image is highly revered by the Nong Khai people and dates back to the ancient Lan Chang Empire Centuries ago. It is believed the image is one of 3 images commissioned to be molded by the 3 daughters of the king of Lan Chang. In 1778. The images were moved to Vientiane and during the reign of King Rama III, they were brought to Thailand, but one sank in a storm. The remaining images were placed in Wat Pho Chai and Wat Ho Klong. Wat Pho Chai is the temple where Luang Pho Phra Sai is housed. There is a celebration every the seventh lunar month at the temple.

Phra That Bang Phuan
A very old pagoda, Phar That Bang Phuan houses the holy relics of Lord Buddha. The pagoda received additions in the reign of King Chai Chettha but later crumbled because of rain. The Fine Art Department made complete restoration in 1970. A fun-filled festival is held very January. The pagoda is 12 km. from km. 10 on highway No.211.

Phra That Nong Khai
From available records, the pagoda collapsed into the Mekong in 1847 and over the years drifted to the center of the river where it can be seen today.

Jorm Manee Beach
The beach is a part of the Mekong and is most beautiful in April when the water lever recedes. It is a favorite spot for tourists.

Friendship Bridge (Thai-Lao)
This is the first international bridge spanning the Mekong. The bridge links Nong Khai with Vientiane and was built jointly by the governments of Australia, Thailand and Laos. The bridge was opened in April 8, 1994.

Sala Kaew Koo and Ban Na Thorng
A unique place with numerous sculptures according to the belief of a sent of Buddhism. Sala Kaew Koo is about 3 km. from Nong Khai on the Nong Khai - Phon Phi - sai road.

Tha Sadet Mark
It is the Bazaar. Open everyday 10.00-18.00 hrs. Most of the souvenirs are from Indo-China. Thai and foreign tourists like shopping here.

AMPHOE BUNG KAN

Phu Tork
Phu Tork means a lonely mountain in the northeastern Thailand. It actually comprises 2 mountains a big Phu Tork and a small Phu Tork. The mountain is now site of a meditation center. The boundaries of the center is :
North - A big Phu Tork
South - Ban Na Duang - Ban Sri Wi - lai road
East - Bung Kan - Pho Mak Khaeng road
West - Ban Na Kham Khaen and Ban Na Sabaeng
A stairway system completed in 1974, takes visitors up the 7 levels of the center, each with a different view and atmosphere. The main levels are level 4 (residence for nuns) and level 5 (housed and grave of Ajarn Chuan, the monk who found the center). Between these two levels are several caves worth exploring. The top (level 7 ) is a shady forest. A mini-bus can be hired for Amphoe Bung Kan to Phu Tork or visitors with cars can drive on highway No.212 from Bung Kan to Phu Tork for 46 km.

Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary
Phu Wan Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of 186.5 square km. It is in Amphoe Bung Kan and Amphoe Se-Ka. The sanctuary is at the northeastern, most corner of the northeast, about 2 km. from the border, The average elevation is 150-300 meters. The soil is sandy in some parts, laterite and clay in others. There are both wet and dry jungles in the area. Wildlife here includes elephants, tigers, leopards, bears, pheasants, monkeys and gibbons. The animals are in a thick jungle area of only 40 square km. thus hindering reproductin.

Places of interest are :
Fun Cave-To the north of the sanctuary, the cave of-fers a cool atmosphere and the refreshing Fun Cave waterfall. There are countless deer and wild rabbits in the area. Eastern side of the sanctuary - Water - eroded rock formations of peculiar shapes are the stars here. The high elevation of 330 meters gives quests a good look of nearby mountains and even those in Laos.

Cha-naen Waterfall - A well-known waterfall of the province, Cha-naen waterfall can be reached via a natural stone bridge set amidst huge boulders. A small lake, Bung Chanaen, has a large trees along the banks and is a pollible refuge of some crocodiles. The waterfall itself is a large on falling down from many rocks. The fine sand around the fall makes the site ideal form camping. Chan Pha Cave - a small cave 500 meters from the stone bridge. Sa-am Waterfall - A beautiful waterfall with rock ridges and walls. You can get to the sanctuary by bus No.4193 which goes every hour from Nong Khai and No.244 goes every 45 minute from Udorn Thani. There are 2 main trekking routes in the sanctuary the Bung Kan - Hua Phu route (pass the sanctuary headquarters) is 36.4 km., the Bung Kan - Chanaen waterfall route is 76.1 km.

AMPHOE SANG KHOM

Than Thorng Waterfall
Located in Ban Pha Tang, the waterfall can be reached by taking highway No.221 and highway No.2186 to Km.74. Than Thorng Waterfall drops from a 30 meter-high cliff. The pool is below.

Than Tip Waterfall
It used to call Tard Serm Waterfall, it is in Ban Serm, Moo 1, Tambon Ban Moung, Amphoe Sang-khorm, Nong Khai. It is the same way as going to Than Thong Waterfall. When you arrive Ban Pha Thang, pass by Ban Phak Som, Ban Khang Khai and you will get to Ban Moung on the left which is 2 km. from km.52. Than tip Waterfall, a narrow beautiful cascade, comprised of three levels. The first level is about 70 meter-high, the second 100 meter and the third level is about 70 meter-high.

AMPHOE THA BO

Tobacco Village
It is on the way from Amphoe Muang to Amphoe Tha Bo on highway 211. Villagers grow tobacco along the river bank of the Mekong river. There is beautiful scenery to see, the foreign tourists are interested in studying the local way of life.

Luang Pho Phar Cho Ong Tue
Luang Pho Phra Cho Ong Tue is the largest gold Buddha image of Nong Khai. The image is at Wat Nam mong. No Clear record exits of when the image was molded but a stone inscription states the image was built in 1562 by King Chai Chettha. The King and 7 noblemen who close to him employed 500 workers to mold the image by using a mixture of gold, brass and silver. Legend has it that the god Indra and 108 angels had to help finish it, consuming 7 years and 7 months at a cost of 8.4 million baht. It is said a person sadness will disappear with a look at the image. Wat Nam Mong can be reached by taking highway No.211 to km.31 and turning left for 2.2 km. past Tha Bo market.

Fresh Fishery Village
It is located in Tambon Khong Nang, Amphoe Tha Bo on the highway Tha Bo-Sri Chiang Mai. They are doing all kinds of fresh fishery. Fish are sent to Bangkok and the north part of Thailand.

Phan-Kra-yor Village
It is on the highway from Ban Nong Song Hong to Amphoe Tha Bo. People make plates of rice flour which they use them to wrap egg rolls. They are exported aboard now. It is a local industry.

AMPHOE PAK CART

Wat Sawang A-rom
The temple is at km.90 of highway no.212. Situated at the foot of a mountain. The temple has a rock formations, stone terraces and shady trees all around. A chapel houses a Buddha image. The chapel provides a commanding view of surrounding areas.

AMPHOE SRI CHIANG MAI

Wat Hin Mak Peng
Wat Hin Mak Peng is a meditation center for monks, nuns and pilgrims. This tranquil sanctuary is adjacent to the Mekong and is ideal for relaxation. The sanctuary is at km. 83 of highway No.2186, 30 km. from Amphoe Sri Chiang Mai.
